Our Story

The Upper Canada Judo Club was formed in February 2002 by Mr. D. Burt. Over two decades, UCJC has grown into one of the region's most decorated judo clubs, with athletes medalling at Provincial, National, and International levels.

Sensei Burt has been involved in judo for over 30 years as both a competitor and coach, holding the rank of 5th Dan black belt. He is an NCCP Level 3 certified coach and sits on the Provincial Grading Board, and was named Judo Ontario's Coach of the Year in recognition of his contribution to developing athletes at every level, including guiding students to the 2009 Cadet World Championships in Budapest.

Our NCCP-certified black belt instructors welcome all levels — competitive athletes and recreational students alike. UCJC is proud of its multi-generational families training side by side.

Weekly Schedule

Programs for all ages and skill levels.

All-Ages Recreational Judo — Beginners

A fun, laidback intro to Judo for all ages — no experience needed. We focus on the fundamentals: safe falling (ukemi), balance, footwork, and basic throws, taught step by step in a relaxed, encouraging environment. Expect warm-up games, partner drills, and light practice that build coordination, confidence, and respect on the mat.

Competitive Judo — Advanced

A high-intensity class for serious Judoka looking to sharpen competition-level skills. Expect demanding conditioning, advanced throws and combinations, and live randori with a competitive edge. We push pace, precision, and tactical execution — grip fighting, transitions, ne-waza pressure, and situational sparring designed to simulate real match conditions. This class demands focus and discipline; you'll be pushed physically and mentally to prepare for tournament-level competition.

Kata Class — Promotion Preparation

A focused, less frequent class dedicated to Kata for students preparing for Shodan grading. Sessions emphasize precision, timing, and correct form over intensity — breaking down each sequence in detail and drilling until movements become clean and consistent. Expect close attention to technique, posture, and partner coordination, with an emphasis on understanding the principles behind each Kata, not just memorizing the sequence. Ideal for students serious about grading and deepening their technical understanding of Judo.
